Telomeres

Three Americans Share Nobel Prize in Medicine. Elizabeth Blackburn, Carol Greider and Jack Szostak are rewarded for their efforts in the discovery and study of telomerase for its great potential to treat aging and cancer.

Long lifespan in worms with long telomeric DNA
Joeng K.

Study shows that Omega 3 consumption slows telomere shortening. Patients in the highest quartile of DHA+EPA (Omega 3 fatty acids) consumption had telomere shortening rates of less than 50% that of those in the highest quartile over 5 years.
Farzaneh-Far R 2010

A study on influencers of telomere shortening of white blood cells made interesting findings after studying 608 patients over 5 years: 23% of patients' telomeres grew naturally, and only 45% of those registered a decrease. Mean telomere loss per year was 42 base pairs. Being male and plump (abdominal obesity) were strong independent predictors of faster telomere loss. The strongest predictor was baseline telomere length.
Farzaneh-Far R 2010

Leukocyte telomere length is preserved with aging in endurance exercise-trained adults and related to maximal aerobic capacity.
LaRocca TJ 2010

Telomere shortening reduces regenerative capacity.
Westhoff JH 2010

Telomere Length may serve as a biomarker for cognitive aging. A number of studies have been implemented to show that Telomere Shortening is associated with cognitive decline in non-demented elders or risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
Yaffe K. 2009

The lifespan of mice were extended up to 45 percent by an experiment by Maria Blasco where her team transfected extra copies of the telomerase gene, along with extra copies of the p53 and p16 genes.
Macfarlane J. 2008

A study of 2000 Chinese men and women shows that Chinese tea consumption is significantly associated with telomere length particularly those in the highest quartile of consumption as it claims to extend lifespan.
Chan R. 2010

In a recent study of over 500 women, daily intake of multivitamins, particularly Vitamin C and E, helped to significantly maintain telomere length.
Qun Xu 2009

Shortening telomeres believed to be the root cause of the immune system malfunction that leads to rheumatoid arthritis.
Weyand CM 2009

Telomerase believed to have rejuvenating effect on cells outside of its effect on telomere length.
Effros R 2009

Homocysteine levels in the blood may accelerate telomere shortening. Folate and B12, traditionally used to improve methylation and combat homocysteine, may help to protect against this.
